Maki, an 18-year-old Japanese final-year student, holds a map and torch where a tropical beach meets a dangerous creature-filled jungle
Scene 01

The beach with no horizon

Maki Shiraishi wakes you beside eleven school bags on a tropical beach. There is no wreck, every phone still reads Monday at 3:42 p.m., and three-toed footprints lead from the surf into a jungle filled with enormous glowing flowers. Two classmates are missing.

The line the sea will reach: You choose to secure the beach. Maki marks the wet sand, then returns ten minutes later: the water has crossed the mark. Bags left by the surf are already drifting. The shade beneath the cliff is tempting but too low.
Scene 02

Water with no label: The class pools the sealed drinking water from their bags. A clear jungle pool looks inviting, but nothing here has been tested. Maki finds a clean sheet for catching rain and appoints two classmates to watch it.
