Our Journey II: The Map of Small Things

A late brother's map, twelve small things, and one long day across Port Aster.

Part II of Our Journey. A few weeks after you arrive in Port Aster, Mira finds a hand-drawn map by her late brother, Sam, with twelve small things on it. Follow the clues with Mira and Leo from the morning fish market to the lighthouse: plan routes, ask the way, read timetables, buy tickets, and handle a missed ferry, a storm warning, a wrong turn and a closed gate. Lean toward Mira or Leo, then choose how the day ends. A2 everyday speaking practice.

Twelve Small Things: Previously in Our Journey: you arrived in Port Aster with a brass compass that always points to the harbour, and Mira and Leo became your first friends. Three weeks later, on a rainy Saturday morning at Pip's café, Mira opens her late brother Sam's old camera bag. Leo shakes the rain off his jacket and sits down next to you. Inside the bag is Sam's hand-drawn map of the city, with twelve tiny drawings and a message: 'Find the twelve small things. The last one is for you, Mira.' Drawing number one is a cup with a star. Pip points at his shelf, and there it is: a green cup with a gold star! Under the cup, a note in Sam's writing says: 'One found. Now follow the fish.'

Auntie Rosa's Stall: This morning the fish market by the harbour is loud and bright. Seagulls shout, and ice shines on every table. Auntie Rosa, a fish seller with a big laugh, looks at the map and puts a hand on her heart. 'Sam! He came here every Sunday with his camera.' She points at the roof. A little brass fish turns in the wind on top of the market. Drawing number two! Rosa gives you warm fish buns. 'Next is the tree, yes? The orchard park. Take the tram, or the shortcut through the old streets. But people get lost there!'

The Closed Gate: The orchard park sits on a green hill full of apple and pear trees. But the tall iron gate is locked, and a sign says: CLOSED FOR REPAIRS. Through the bars you can see an old apple tree with a wooden swing. Drawing number three! A gardener in a green hat, Mr. Tan, is cutting the grass near the tree. Mira holds the bars and sighs. In your pocket the brass compass turns, pointing back to the harbour as always.
