Scene 01

Twenty minutes to be understood

It is two on a Monday afternoon in September. You are an adult science student and a volunteer at the library club. The gallery has lent you a quiet office for a twenty-minute scholarship call. Mira chairs the panel; Leo is the second interviewer. Pip, your best friend, waits outside. A place on the six-week course abroad could help your work, but the panel must check your application before deciding.

Scene 02

The missing half of your name

The phone cuts out halfway through your surname. Mira starts reading an application about music, but you study science. You stop her before she asks the first question. She checks the application number in your invitation and opens the right file. Asking her to repeat something has saved both of you from a very strange interview.

Twenty visitors, not twenty workshops: The correct form has another problem. You put twenty in the box for sessions, but twenty was the visitor total across two Saturday science sessions. Mira looks impressed by a result you never achieved. You correct the number and offer the attendance record. She adds the correction before the panel judges your experience.
