Scene 01

Lost under the glass roof

Your first day in Port Aster starts with a lost bag and a little magic. Your night train stops under the big glass roof of the old station. You are alone in a new city. A kind old station clerk puts a small brass compass in your hand. “A welcome gift,” he says. “It always points to the harbour.” You smile and turn to take your big green bag. But your bag is gone! A young woman with a camera stops next to you. This is Mira.

The lost property office: Mira takes you to the lost property office under the big station clock. You see old hats, wet umbrellas, a violin and a fat orange cat asleep on the desk. But there is no green bag. The clerk gives you a form. “Write about your bag here,” he says. Mira helps you with the English words.

Pip's café: Mira takes you to a little café next to the orchard park. It smells of warm bread and sweet fruit. Behind the counter stands Pip, a cheerful pineapple in a jade jacket. Yes, a talking pineapple! In Port Aster, this is normal. Mira laughs at your face. “Order something,” she says. “I have twenty minutes before work.”
