Our Journey III: The Night Train North

A stolen letter, a stopped train, and one long night that changes everything.

Part III of Our Journey. Previously, a brass compass that always points to the harbour led you to Mira and Leo in Port Aster. Now the three of you take the night train north to Mira's first exhibition, until Leo's grandfather's letter about the family boatyard disappears in a tunnel and a storm stops the train in the mountains. Question a tired conductor, a street musician, a nervous businessman and a kind grandmother. Compare clues, explain your reasoning, help passengers when the lights fail, and open your heart to Leo or Mira in the dining car. Three endings.

Mira, camera in hand and a route map under her arm, waits on a rain-streaked night-train platform
Scene 01

Rain on the glass roof

Previously in Our Journey: a brass compass that always points to the harbour led you into the lives of Mira and Leo. Tonight, rain drums on the old glass roof of Port Aster Station. The 9:40 night train north reaches the mountain town in the morning, and Mira's first exhibition opens there tomorrow evening. Mira holds a black portfolio against her chest. Leo carries a worn canvas bag and checks its inside pocket again and again. In your pocket, the compass needle turns towards the harbour, as if it is saying goodbye.

The empty frame: In your compartment, Mira opens the portfolio on her knees. Inside are black-and-white prints of Port Aster: the orchard park in the rain, the cafés at night, the harbour control tower under the stars. Her late brother started this series. The last frame is empty, just a white card in his handwriting: 'Dawn over the northern pass.' He always planned to take that picture from this train, but he never got the chance. Mira wants to take it for him at sunrise. Across the corridor, a man in a grey coat watches the portfolio, then looks up at Leo's bag on the luggage rack.

Music in the corridor: In the swaying corridor, a young street musician with silver hair plays a slow tune on her violin. Her name is Juno, and her open case holds a few coins and a sticker from the Port Aster harbour market. A grandmother with a knitting basket, Mrs Finch, presses a pair of red woollen gloves into Juno's hands. 'Your fingers are like ice, dear.' Near the door, the man in the grey coat whispers into his phone: 'Yes. It's on the train.' When he sees you, he hangs up fast. The conductor, Mr Bell, yawns as he checks your tickets. 'Long tunnel at eleven,' he says. 'The lights always flicker in there.'
