Our Journey IV: The Harbor of Second Chances

A dream job abroad, a boatyard up for sale, and forty-eight hours to decide what home means.

Part IV of Our Journey. Previously, a brass compass that always points to the harbour led you to Mira and Leo, and a stormy night train brought back Leo's grandfather's letter. Now two deadlines land on the same grey morning: a dream job in Vancouver needs your answer within 48 hours, and the harbour board is ready to sell Leo's family boatyard to Northgate. Then Mira overhears half a phone call and believes you are leaving without a word. Negotiate with Northgate's polished representative, compare options, defend your viewpoint, organise the neighbours, and help Leo guide a fishing crew home through a storm. Repair what was broken, open your heart to Leo or Mira, and choose one of three endings.

Scene 01

Two deadlines before breakfast

Previously in Our Journey: a brass compass that always points to the harbour led you to Mira and Leo, and a stormy night train brought back Leo's grandfather's letter. Now it is seven o'clock on a grey Tuesday morning in the boatyard. You and Leo are sanding the hull of the Old Pearl, his family's old wooden boat, when your phone buzzes. It is Tidewater, the famous Vancouver studio that designs public waterfronts, and they are offering you a dream job: a two-year contract, the one you applied for months ago, before Port Aster changed your life. The deadline is hard: they need your answer within 48 hours. At the same moment, a courier hands Leo a white envelope with the harbour board's stamp. He reads it twice, and the colour drains from his face.

A yard that launches no boats: Leo reads the letter aloud in a flat voice. Northgate has made a new offer for the waterfront, and the board will vote tomorrow, Wednesday, at six o'clock in the harbour control tower. The board's lawyers accept his grandfather's old promise, but only for a working boatyard, and they point out that this yard has launched no new boat in three years. Northgate wants to build 'Aster Quay' here: glass apartments, a private marina and a rooftop restaurant. Leo folds the letter into a tiny square. Then he notices your face, and you tell him about Tidewater. He hugs you, and his smile is real, but it doesn't quite reach his eyes.

Half a phone call: At eleven, Tidewater's director calls. You step away onto the windy quay to answer, and the line is so bad that you almost have to shout. 'Yes, Vancouver sounds wonderful... A flight on Saturday could work... No, I haven't told them yet. It's complicated... I'll probably say yes, but please give me until Thursday, because first I need to talk to them.' The wind steals the end of every sentence. When you turn around, Mira is standing two metres away with two paper cups of coffee, one of them for you. She has overheard half of everything. She heard 'Vancouver' and 'Saturday'. She heard 'I haven't told them yet' and 'I'll probably say yes'. Her face closes like a door.
