Our Journey V: The Glass Summit

A glass hall, a leaked page, and a waterfront that depends on how much truth you tell, and when.

Part V of Our Journey. Port Aster hosts an international harbour summit in a hall made of glass, and you are presenting the community plan you built with Leo and Mira: free English classes for harbour workers and a restored old boatyard. On the first night a leaked page suggests your own partner foundation is hiding a land deal that would erase the waterfront. Read hidden motives, weigh loyalties, choose Leo or Mira, and decide how much truth to reveal, and when. C1 speaking practice through a fictional story.

Scene 01

The Glass Hall

Previously in Our Journey: a brass compass that always points to the harbour brought you to Port Aster, and with Leo and Mira you turned one stubborn idea into a real plan: free English classes for harbour workers and a restored old boatyard. Tonight the Harbour Futures Summit opens in the Glass Hall, a pavilion of glass where forty port cities compete for a single fund. Your partner, the Meridian Foundation, has promised to match it, and its director, Celia Vance, raises a toast to 'honest harbours'. Beyond the glass, delegates drift into the lantern-lit orchard to talk more freely. Leo has slipped out to the harbour terrace, his phone buzzing again. In your pocket, the compass needle trembles toward the waterfront.

Through Mira's lens: The reception spills into the orchard park, where paper lanterns sway between the pear trees and delegates speak more freely than they did under the glass. Mira frames them through her lens and narrates in a whisper. Councillor Dorian Pike of Saltmere has checked a harbour map on his phone three times. Celia Vance laughs a beat too late at every joke about the waterfront. Then Mira lowers the camera. The foundation is also paying for her late brother Sam's exhibition, which opens on the summit's final night: his harbour photographs, finally on a wall. 'So I owe them,' she says, 'and I hate owing anyone.'

The midnight page: Just before midnight the three of you wait for the last tram beneath the old glass roof of the station. Your phone lights up: a message from an unknown number, one photograph, no words. It is a page from a Memorandum of Intent between the Meridian Foundation and Halcyon Quay Holdings: an 'exclusive negotiation period' for Waterfront Lots 1 to 9, dated three weeks ago. Leo reads the lot numbers twice. Lots 1 to 9 are the whole waterfront, including his family's boatyard, the very site your plan promises to restore. Mira says what everyone is thinking: if this is real, your partner is using your plan as a pretty curtain. The compass in your pocket swings hard toward the harbour.
