Ten Words Before Midnight

One word in a ceasefire treaty has been changed. You are the only one who noticed. The deadline is midnight.

The truce between the Republic of Valdora and the Kesh Federation expires at midnight, and you are the lead English interpreter at the summit in neutral Halden. At 10:41 p.m. you notice that Article 4 says 'redeployment' in English but 'withdrawal' in Kesh: one word that could quietly break the peace. Interpret furious speeches faithfully, stand firm against a threat to your sister, decide whether to trust a security officer or a journalist, and choose what the record hears under the observatory dome before the clock strikes twelve. Four endings.

Ji-won, the chief interpreter, holds the final treaty draft in the night summit booth above the city
Scene 01

Booth three, 10:41 p.m.

Rain drums on the glass roof of Halden's Summit Hall. From booth three, high above the delegations, you watch the clock: 10:41 p.m. The truce between Valdora and the Kesh Federation expires at midnight. As lead English interpreter, you check the final English text against the Kesh text, line by line. Article 4, line two. English: 'the redeployment of forces from the Merrow Valley.' Kesh: 'vashet', withdrawal, every soldier and every flag. One word. Beside you, Ji-won, chief interpreter and your mentor, twirls her green highlighter. She came back from her tea break at ten with cold hands, and she has not looked at Article 4 once.

Three quiet edits: You climb the spiral stair to the old observatory, where Ione, the treaty archivist, prepares the signing copies beneath the dome. The brass telescope points at a sky flickering with storm light. Under her reading lamp, the nine o'clock draft lies beside the final English print. You compare them word by word and find three quiet edits: 'withdrawal' became 'redeployment' in Article 4, monitors 'shall' became 'may' in Article 7, and 'thirty days' became 'ninety' in Article 9. Ione's print log shows all three pages came from the mediator's office at 9:58 p.m. One margin carries a faint stroke of green highlighter.

The grandmaster's favour: Celeste Voss, Valdora's chief negotiator, weighs her next move over a chessboard as midnight nears
Scene 03

The grandmaster's favour

10:52 p.m. The recess bell has just rung when Celeste Voss, Valdora's chief negotiator, appears beside you at the glass sculpture in the middle of the hall. Before diplomacy she was a chess grandmaster, and she still studies people as if they were positions on a board. She holds a leaked copy of the closing statement that Cassian, the Kesh Federation's envoy, will deliver at eleven. One sentence is circled: Valdora's leaders are 'cowards in clean uniforms'. 'My generals will be watching the broadcast,' she murmurs. 'You could make it... anxious leaders, perhaps.'
