Mira in an ivory one-shoulder top meets your gaze over a contract at a rooftop launch
Scene 01

The clause beneath the champagne

At 9:40 p.m., you represent independent illustrator Anya at a luxury brand's launch. Mira, the opposing negotiator, presents a generous campaign fee beside a clause requiring permission for every future commission. She says the offer must be signed before ten. Anya has asked you to negotiate, not to sign for her, and wants to retain ownership and the freedom to take other work.

Scene 02

The printer's deadline is not yours

You ask Mira what actually expires at ten. The event manager confirms that the printed launch programme closes then; a late name can still appear online. Mira's email from the commercial director instructs her to present that production deadline as the last opportunity to accept the partnership. She shows the relevant instruction without exposing the rest of the correspondence.

A name on the work, a lock on the calendar: The headline says Anya keeps ownership of her illustrations. A later clause nevertheless requires the brand's permission for every future commission, with no end date. Anya already has a modest library commission waiting. You ask Mira to read the restriction alongside the reassuring headline, rather than treating ownership alone as complete protection.
