PTE Core for Canada immigration: format, CLB and preparation guide
IELTS specialists — MUIC & Chulalongkorn University alumni, IELTS Speaking Band 9, trained via IDP IELTS teacher courses.

PTE Core is a computer-based, everyday-English test accepted by IRCC for Canadian economic immigration. It has Speaking & Writing, Reading and Listening parts, with several integrated tasks contributing to more than one skill. Pearson's current format gives approximate ranges of 50–65 minutes, 27–37 minutes and 22–37 minutes. Study the task scoring, practise microphone and typing responses, and confirm every target against IRCC's current CLB table.
PTE Core is not PTE Academic
PTE Core focuses on everyday and workplace English for Canadian immigration. PTE Academic is designed mainly for academic and professional study contexts. The interfaces feel related, but the tasks, content and score requirements are not interchangeable.

Current test structure
Pearson groups PTE Core into Speaking & Writing, Reading and Listening. The official format contains integrated tasks such as Read Aloud, Repeat Sentence, Respond to a Situation, Summarize Written Text and Write from Dictation.
Because an integrated response can affect multiple communicative skills, accuracy in high-frequency tasks can improve more than one reported score.
From PTE Core score to CLB
IRCC publishes the official conversion for each ability. Immigration eligibility and points depend on the programme and often on the lowest relevant skill, so use the current IRCC table instead of averaging or applying a PTE Academic concordance.
Six-week preparation map
- Week 1: diagnostic and task-format study.
- Weeks 2–3: short daily loops for fluency, dictation, reading accuracy and concise writing.
- Week 4: integrated tasks and strict form rules.
- Week 5: mixed timed sections with error categories.
- Week 6: official samples, full simulation and a final weak-skill repair cycle.
High-value practice
Repeat Sentence and Write from Dictation reward accurate listening memory; Read Aloud needs clear phrasing; Respond to a Situation needs a direct, socially appropriate response; written summaries need complete meaning within the form rule.
