IELTS Academic and IELTS General Training are the two main versions of IELTS. Academic is for university study and professional registration; General Training is for work, training and migration, such as to Canada, Australia or New Zealand. Listening and Speaking are identical; Reading and Writing differ.

The Academic Word List (AWL) is Averil Coxhead’s list of 570 word families that are frequent across academic texts but outside the 2,000 most common English words. Published in 2000 and split into 10 sublists, it is widely used to build vocabulary for IELTS Academic, TOEFL and university study.

An adaptive test changes its difficulty according to your answers: strong performance leads to harder questions or modules, weaker performance to easier ones, so it can measure ability precisely with fewer questions. The Duolingo English Test, the Digital SAT and TOEFL iBT Reading and Listening are adaptive.

A band score is the unit IELTS uses to report results: a number from 0 to 9, in half-band steps, given for Listening, Reading, Writing and Speaking and as an overall band. Each band has a descriptor — for example, band 7 is a “good user” and band 9 an “expert user”.

Bluebook is the College Board’s digital testing app used for the SAT, the PSAT-family tests and AP Exams. You install it on your own or a school device and complete exam setup before test day, and it also offers free full-length SAT practice tests.

CAEL (Canadian Academic English Language) is a computer-delivered academic English test for admission to Canadian universities and colleges. Its integrated, topic-based tasks combine reading and listening with writing and speaking, and scores run from 10 to 90 in 10-point bands.

The Canadian Language Benchmarks (CLB) are Canada’s 12-level national standard for adult English ability in listening, speaking, reading and writing. For immigration, IRCC sets minimum CLB levels and converts scores from approved tests such as CELPIP-General, IELTS General Training and PTE Core.

The CEFR (Common European Framework of Reference for Languages) is the Council of Europe’s six-level scale of language ability: A1 and A2 (basic user), B1 and B2 (independent user), and C1 and C2 (proficient user). Most major English tests map their scores to CEFR levels.

Coherence and Cohesion is an IELTS Writing criterion that measures how clearly your ideas are organised and linked. Coherence is logical order and paragraphing; cohesion is the accurate use of linking words, referencing and substitution — not simply adding more connectors.

A collocation is a combination of words that native speakers naturally use together, such as “make a decision”, “heavy rain” or “strongly agree”. Using accurate collocations makes writing and speaking sound natural and is rewarded under IELTS Lexical Resource.

A concordance table is an official, research-based chart showing roughly equivalent scores on two tests or scales, such as IELTS and TOEFL iBT, PTE Academic or the CEFR. Equivalences are approximate, and universities and employers may set their own minimum score for each test.

A cue card is the task card in IELTS Speaking Part 2. It gives a topic and three or four prompts; you get one minute to prepare and make notes, then speak alone for up to two minutes, after which the examiner may ask one or two short follow-up questions.

The Digital SAT is the College Board’s university admission test, taken in the Bluebook app on a laptop or tablet. Its Reading and Writing and Math sections each have two modules, the second adapting to how you did on the first; it takes about 2 hours 14 minutes and is scored from 400 to 1600.

The Duolingo English Test (DET) is an online, computer-adaptive English proficiency test taken at home on your own computer in about one hour. It gives one overall score from 10 to 160 in 5-point steps, results usually arrive within about two days, and many universities accept it for admission.

An Enquiry on Results (EOR) is the official IELTS re-mark service. You can apply within six weeks of your test date to have one or more skills re-marked by senior examiners, and the fee is refunded if your score goes up.

Fluency and Coherence is one of four equally weighted IELTS Speaking criteria. It measures how well you keep talking at length without long pauses, repetition or self-correction, and how logically you connect ideas with appropriate linking words and discourse markers.

The GED (General Educational Development) is a US-designed high school equivalency credential earned by passing four computer-based subject tests: Mathematical Reasoning, Reasoning Through Language Arts, Science and Social Studies. Each is scored from 100 to 200, and 145 is the passing score.

GED College Ready is the score level of 165–174 on a GED subject test, above the 145 passing score; 175–200 is College Ready + Credit. These levels signal readiness for college-level work, but any placement or credit benefit depends on the receiving college.

The Global Scale of English (GSE) is Pearson’s numeric scale of English ability from 10 to 90. It is aligned to the CEFR but more detailed, so progress within a level such as B1 or B2 can be measured. PTE scores are reported on a 10–90 scale linked to the GSE.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy is the IELTS Writing and Speaking criterion for grammar. Range is the variety of structures you use, from simple to complex sentences; accuracy is how many of your sentences are error-free. Higher bands need both, not just long sentences.

IELTS for UKVI is IELTS Academic or General Training taken at a test centre approved by UK Visas and Immigration, so the result can support a UK visa application. The content, format and marking match standard IELTS; what differs is the approved, extra-secure test session.

Lexical Resource is the IELTS Writing and Speaking criterion for vocabulary. It rewards a wide, precise and natural range of words — including less common vocabulary, accurate collocations and effective paraphrase — while frequent word-choice or spelling errors lower the score.

A mock test is a full-length practice exam taken under real timing and conditions. It estimates your current score, builds stamina and time management, and shows which question types cost you marks, so you know what to fix before the real test.

The MU-GRAD Test is Mahidol University’s own computer-based English proficiency test, run by the Faculty of Graduate Studies. Master’s and PhD applicants and students use it as an alternative to IELTS or TOEFL to meet Mahidol’s English requirement; the score needed depends on the programme.

The overall band score is the average of your four IELTS skill bands, rounded to the nearest half band. An average ending in .25 rounds up to the next half band and one ending in .75 rounds up to the next whole band, so 6.25 becomes 6.5, 6.75 becomes 7.0 and 6.125 becomes 6.0.

Paraphrasing is expressing the same meaning with different words and structure — for example, “prices rose sharply” becomes “there was a steep increase in prices”. Exam questions often paraphrase the text or audio, and paraphrasing the task instead of copying it helps your Lexical Resource score.

PTE Academic (Pearson Test of English Academic) is a computer-based English test for study abroad and visas. It takes about two hours in three parts — Speaking & Writing, Reading and Listening — uses automated scoring, and reports an overall score and four skill scores from 10 to 90.

PTE Core is Pearson’s computer-based test of everyday and workplace English, accepted by Immigration, Refugees and Citizenship Canada (IRCC) for Canadian economic immigration. It is a different test from PTE Academic; scores run from 10 to 90 and are converted to CLB levels.

A raw score is your number of correct answers before conversion. IELTS Listening and Reading each have 40 questions, and your mark out of 40 is converted to a band from 0 to 9; Academic and General Training Reading use different conversion tables, so the same raw score can give different bands.

Scanning is searching a text quickly for one specific piece of information — a name, date, number or keyword — and ignoring everything else until you find it. In exams you scan for the part of the passage that matches the question, then read that part carefully.

Score validity is how long an organisation will accept a test result. IELTS, TOEFL iBT, PTE, Duolingo English Test, TOEIC and CELPIP results are generally accepted for two years from the test date, but universities, employers and immigration authorities can set their own limits.

Shadowing is a speaking practice technique in which you listen to a recording of a fluent speaker and repeat it aloud almost at the same time, copying their pronunciation, stress, rhythm and intonation. It builds natural pronunciation and fluency for speaking tests such as IELTS and PTE.

Skimming is reading a text quickly to get its gist — the topic, main idea and structure — without reading every word, usually by looking at the title, headings and the first sentence of each paragraph. It helps with matching-headings questions and time management in IELTS or TOEIC Reading.

Superscoring is combining your best section scores from different test dates into one new total. For the SAT, a superscore adds your highest Reading and Writing score to your highest Math score across all sittings. Each university decides whether it superscores.

Task Achievement is one of four equally weighted IELTS Writing Task 1 criteria. It measures how fully and accurately you answer the task: in Academic, a clear overview plus the key features of the data; in General Training, every bullet point of the letter in the right tone.

Task Response is one of four equally weighted IELTS Writing Task 2 criteria. It measures whether you answer every part of the question, keep a clear position throughout, and develop your main ideas with relevant explanation and examples.

TOEFL iBT is ETS’s internet-based test of academic English in Reading, Listening, Writing and Speaking. Since 21 January 2026 it reports each section and the overall score on a CEFR-aligned 1–6 scale in half-point steps, with a comparable 0–120 score shown during a two-year transition.

TOEIC Listening & Reading is ETS’s workplace English test and the version most people mean by “TOEIC”. It has 200 multiple-choice questions in about two hours — 100 Listening questions in 45 minutes and 100 Reading questions in 75 minutes — and is scored from 10 to 990.

TOEIC Listening & Reading คือข้อสอบภาษาอังกฤษเพื่อการทำงานของ ETS และเป็นแบบที่คนส่วนใหญ่หมายถึงเมื่อพูดว่า “TOEIC” มีข้อสอบปรนัย 200 ข้อ ใช้เวลาราว 2 ชั่วโมง แบ่งเป็น Listening 100 ข้อ 45 นาที และ Reading 100 ข้อ 75 นาที คะแนนอยู่ในช่วง 10–990

TOEIC Speaking & Writing is ETS’s separate, computer-based test of productive workplace English. The Speaking test has 11 tasks in about 20 minutes and the Writing test has 8 tasks in about 60 minutes; each is scored from 0 to 200, and some employers ask for it alongside Listening & Reading.

True / False / Not Given is an IELTS Reading question type. You decide whether a statement agrees with the information in the passage (True), contradicts it (False), or cannot be checked because the passage does not say (Not Given). Yes / No / Not Given works the same way for the writer’s views.
