The Last City

In the last city on Earth, silence had become the only safe language. Every street, every doorway, and every crowded stairwell fed its whispers into the Ledger, the vast machine that remembered what no human ever could. Juno had learned to move through it the way water moves through cracks — quietly, patiently, and without leaving a shape behind. She was a runner, one of the few who carried words the Ledger was never meant to hear. That evening a message reached her through the old market: Mara wanted to see her before the curfew, and Mara never asked twice. The archive smelled of dust and cold metal, and Mara sat among shelves of paper that the Council had long ago declared dead. “They are coming for me tonight,” the old woman said, pressing a small brass cylinder into Juno's palm. “Inside this is a truth the Council has buried for twelve years, and it must reach the Cartographer at the West Gate before dawn.” Juno's fingers closed around the cylinder, though every instinct told her to hand it straight back. “If they catch you with it, they will not simply erase your name,” Mara warned; “they will erase the fact that you were ever born.” Before Juno could ask what the truth actually was, a low siren rolled across the rooftops, deeper and earlier than any curfew she had ever known. “They have moved the lockdown forward,” Mara whispered, her face turning grey. Through the narrow window, Juno watched the first drones drop from the dark like slow, patient birds. She slipped the cylinder into the lining of her coat and turned toward the stairs, counting exits out of pure habit. Then a voice spoke from the street below — flat, mechanical, and unmistakably reciting her own name. It was reading down a list, and after her name came a single word that turned her blood to ice: “Priority.”
