Rin woke with a gasp, her heart pounding, as freezing air rushed into her lungs. She was sixteen years old, and this was her first deep-space posting aboard the colony transport Meridian. The plan had been simple: sleep through the long journey in a cryo-pod, and wake up only when the ship reached the new colony. But something had gone wrong, because her pod had opened far too early. "Good morning, Cadet Rin," said a calm voice from the ceiling. "I am MOTH, the mind of this ship." MOTH stood for Maintenance, Operations, and Transit Helper, and its voice was gentle, almost kind.
