In-House or Public Test: which TOEIC should you book?

CPA runs TOEIC Listening & Reading under two programmes. Institutional Program scores — the In-House tests in Bangkok, Open Testing in the provinces and on-site sessions arranged by organisations — are for use in Thailand, the country where you take the test. Public Program scores are recognised both in Thailand and abroad, can only be booked by individuals, and the Public Test runs once a month.

For a Thai employer, a university exit requirement or a job application in Thailand, the 1,800 THB In-House test is usually what people take, and it has the fastest results. If an organisation outside Thailand will check your score, pay the extra 200 THB for the Public Test. Either way, ask the organisation which TOEIC it accepts before you pay.

How to register for TOEIC in Thailand, step by step

  • Choose your test: In-House (paper or computer), Open Testing near you, or the Public Test if your score must be recognised abroad.
  • Check the schedule on cpathailand.co.th — the Bangkok test centre timetable or the Open Testing calendar — and pick a date and session.
  • Read the rules for that test type on CPA's site: booking, check-in, ID, fees, test-room rules and results.
  • Book through the CPA Call Center at least one business day before the test, Monday–Saturday 08:00–16:30: 0-2260-7061 or 0-2259-3990 ext. 101 (ext. 108 in English). CPA does not take individual bookings by email, and Open Testing bookings are taken from 10:00.
  • Give your English name, date of birth and gender exactly as they appear on the ID you will bring.
  • Pay: on test day for the Bangkok tests, or by the QR code transfer CPA emails you on the booking day for Open Testing.

What to bring on TOEIC test day

Bring an original, valid and undamaged ID with a current photo. Thai citizens can use a Thai national ID card, a Thai smart-card driving licence or a Thai passport. Non-Thai test takers need a passport plus a photo student ID (or a full-time student status letter less than 30 days old) or a Thai work permit; non-Thai test takers without either can test with a passport only.

Arrive and register one hour before your session — the check-in counter closes 10 minutes before the start. If you arrive late or your ID is incomplete you can be refused entry and charged a penalty fee: 500 THB for the In-House test, 2,000 THB for the Public Test, payable when you next test.

Nothing goes into the test room: no phones or electronics, no watch of any kind, no medicine or lozenges, books, papers or bags. You sit where the proctor places you, cannot leave without permission, and may not underline, mark or take notes in the test book — so practise answering without writing notes.

Changing your date, cancelling and retaking

  • To move or cancel a booking, tell CPA at least one business day before the test (business hours 08:00–16:30, excluding public holidays).
  • Moving or cancelling on the test day or afterwards costs a penalty fee — 500 THB for the In-House test, 2,000 THB for the Public Test — added to your next test.
  • You can book your next test only after your latest score has been released, and CPA applies a minimum gap between test dates: a few calendar days for Thai citizens and 12 calendar days for non-Thai test takers without a Thai student or work document.
  • A retake taken inside the minimum gap is void, and the fee is not refunded.

When do TOEIC results come out?

Before you enter the test room you choose to collect your score report at the Bangkok centre or to have it sent by EMS (the EMS fee is paid in cash on test day). You cannot change this choice after the test starts.

  • In-House test, paper or computer: one business day after a Monday–Friday test and two business days after a Saturday test, for collection 14:30–16:30 at the Bangkok centre; EMS reports are posted one to two business days after the test.
  • Open Testing: EMS only, posted within two business days of the test.
  • Public Test: four business days after the test, by collection (14:30–16:30) or EMS.
  • Collect your report within 90 days with your ID and your TOEIC Test Registration Form; after 90 days you must order a Score Report Reprint.
  • CPA certifies TOEIC scores for two years from the test date, and only issues reprints and certificates for scores up to two years old.

What the fee buys: the TOEIC Listening & Reading test

TOEIC Listening & Reading has 200 multiple-choice questions — 100 Listening in 45 minutes and 100 Reading in 75 minutes — and ETS says the whole session takes about 2.5 hours including the background questions. On the paper version you shade your answers on an answer sheet. Listening and Reading are each scored from 5 to 495, for a total of 10 to 990.

ETS maps total scores to the CEFR: 550 is the minimum for B1, 785 for B2 and 945 for C1. If you are comparing a TOEIC score with IELTS, PTE, Duolingo or TOEFL, read our score comparison guide and use the free converter at engforedu.com/tools/english-score-converter.
