The Retreat

The invitation arrived on the worst morning of my life, as though someone had been watching and waiting for exactly that. It was handwritten on thick cream paper, and it said only: "Cora, you have carried this alone long enough. Come and put it down. — Meridian." I had told no one how alone I felt since my sister died; I had barely admitted it to myself. Meridian was a retreat spoken about only in whispers, exclusive, invitation-only, impossible to apply to. I was thirty-four, successful on paper, and so hollowed out by grief and overwork that I could no longer feel the floor under my feet. Every sensible part of me knew that a letter naming my private pain should frighten me, not comfort me. But desperate people do not run from the one voice that says it understands; they run toward it. Two weeks later a silent car drove me four hours into the mountains, past the last village, past the last signal on my phone. Meridian was beautiful, all warm wood and green light, and the people who greeted me were radiant in a way I could not name. At the gate, a gentle woman asked for my phone, "just for the duration, so you can finally be here, fully." I handed it over, and the small click of it disappearing into a drawer was the last ordinary sound of my old life. Everyone smiled at me, warmly and constantly, and it took me three days to notice that no one ever quite stopped. I had come to Meridian to put my burden down; I did not yet understand that they intended to replace it with themselves.
