What the GED is

The GED — short for General Educational Development — is an internationally recognised high-school equivalency credential. Passing it certifies that you have knowledge and skills equivalent to a US high-school graduate, without having to finish a traditional school programme.

It is issued by GED Testing Service and delivered on computer at official test centres. For many Thai students who left school early, study independently, or want a faster route to university, it is a practical alternative to a Matthayom 6 (M6) diploma — but always confirm that your target university accepts it.

The four GED subjects

The GED is made up of four separate subject tests. You do not have to sit them all on the same day — you can take them one at a time and build up your passes.

• Reasoning Through Language Arts (RLA) — reading, understanding arguments, grammar and a written response.
• Mathematical Reasoning — number sense, basic algebra, geometry, graphs and problem-solving.
• Science — reading experiments, data and scientific reasoning.
• Social Studies — civics and government, history, economics and geography.

How the GED is scored (100–200, 145 to pass)

Each subject is scored on a scale of 100 to 200. To pass a subject you need at least 145, and you must pass all four subjects to earn the full GED credential — a strong score in one subject cannot rescue a fail in another.

Above the pass mark, scores fall into performance tiers: 145–164 is Passing / High School Equivalency, 165–174 is 'College Ready', and 175–200 is 'College Ready + Credit', which some US colleges may count toward course credit. Using the GED in Thailand

In Thailand the GED is widely used as a high-school-equivalency certificate for university admission. Many Thai universities' international programmes accept it, and universities in the US, UK, Australia and elsewhere also recognise it as evidence of secondary completion.

Because it is taken in English, the GED also demonstrates a level of English ability — though most universities still ask for a separate English test such as IELTS. Recognition, minimum scores and age conditions vary by university and can change, so verify the current rules with each specific university and with the testing service before you rely on it.
